While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Popular Picture Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, heard cracking sounds echoing around the suburb.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running at something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous the injured.
