The Denver Nuggets star secured the NBA's Most Valuable Player honor in three of the past four years.

Thrice-crowned NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets fell by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt towards the end of the second quarter in an inadvertent collision with teammate Jones.

His teammate stepped on the foot of the MVP, who promptly collapsed to the ground grabbing his leg.

The veteran player, who tops the NBA this season in rebounds and assists, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the game prior to suffering the setback.

The player will have an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the problem.

"Immediately, Jokic knew something was wrong," said Denver head coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Anyone that is injured, it's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as important as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust together. Obviously, right now, I'm focused about Jokic personally and the frustration of experiencing an event of that nature."
