The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the feared consequences of growing older. Demi Moore delivers a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into hosting a workout series on TV. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller includes Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take some time off from covering global conflict to embark on a luxury cruise with an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy passengers. However when an enigmatic female goes overboard overnight and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities in this innovative supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of sensing the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has left the youth on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Chastain achieves to depict the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission with uncovering a mole among the team from a group of five – including is his own wife. The two stars are masters of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast take part the intelligent intelligence fun.
