Three Lions Coach Shares His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, âNights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 ⌠poor equipment, limited resources,â and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.
Staggering Ascent
His advancement stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he established a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the âpinnacleâ according to him.
âAll begins with a vision ⌠However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream then you break it down: âWhat's the process, gradually?â Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams wonât get it done. We have to build a structured plan that allows us for optimal success.â
Detail-Oriented Approach
Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the England collective and avoids language such as "break".
âThis isn't a vacation or a break,â Barry notes. âWe needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.â
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as âvery greedyâ. âWe aim to control each element of play,â he declares. âWe strive to own the whole ground and thatâs what we spend many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
âWe get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.
âTo create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we donât have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.â
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers â against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
âThe manager and I agree that the style of play must reflect the best aspects of English football,â Barry says. âThe physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
âTo make it light, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
âThere are morale boosts for managers at both ends of the pitch â playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics â defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.â
Passion for Progress
His desire for development knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis â focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins â got into print. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
Lampardâs successor with the club took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
