Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
