The $150m Men Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
The National Basketball Association season starts this week, marking the first time in a ten years that Australia's pair of most prominent basketball stars â Ben Simmons and Patty Mills â are without a roster spot.
Their absence indicates a changing of the guard, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with new huge contracts establishing them as some of the country's highest athletic earners.
They aren't the only ones. A group of 14 Aussies are set to compete for minutes around the league, ranging from veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
Following lengthy negotiations with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey finally inked his new deal worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four seasons last month. Itâs a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is cheap for Giddeyâs position and profile as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the young star begins this year with a point to make.
After being moved by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, Giddey watched as his old team stormed to the title in his absence. As the Bulls aim to make the playoffs in the less competitive East, he will need to show his scoring and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the NBAâs fringe.
Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth
Daniels agreed to the same deal as Giddey recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Atlanta player's career has skyrocketed in the city following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg â more than one full takeaway per game higher than the total of second place.
Performing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be successful this campaign as a playmaking option and elite defender as long as the Hawks advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was below league average last year, and continue to develop his distribution and attacking, Daniels could become one of the leagueâs most well-rounded players.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Pacers forward Furphy has emerged as a fan favourite in the state following a succession of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics led league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the âtop Caucasian leaper weâve seen in a whileâ, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be a possibility.
Following playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his debut season, the former college player is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might lean towards young players following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard Proctor fell in the June draft down to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders Cleveland selected him. The Cavs are favourites to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a first-year player taken in the second round to see much court time. But the Australian has earned time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a chance to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting centre position in the Grizzlies given top prospect Zach Edey will be out for the start of the campaign after ankle surgery.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular action if the team find themselves in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive specialist in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Greenâs off-season shoulder procedure has left him with no return date to come back. The 24-year-old still has a contract for next season, but will not want to allow his teammates at the developing Hornets an excessive head start. And injury has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed key exhibition chances in the Mavericks.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, court time this year. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in the Timberwolves, but seems to be little more than a big brother keeping Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to earn playing time with Proctor for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was set to retire, he addressed it with a training clip posted on his social media over the weekend, demonstrating the 37-year-old remains in form and determined on landing one more league deal.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an break in Australia, angling and using with a football. Although he posted on Instagram last month to reject rumors he was done, the 29-year-old â an elite player as recently as 2021 â has not yet return to the league.
