NY Introduces Portal for Public to Submit ICE Images Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
The state AG has introduced a recent digital platform asking locals to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This action comes just a day after a high-profile immigration operation disrupted NYC's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.
US Citizens Held During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations occurred in the city on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," state officials wrote in a announcement.
"For those who saw and captured ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to share that footage with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these reports and investigating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The platform provides fields to submit images and video footage of the raid, plus a field to indicate geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that states that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or public report."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a well-known neighborhood of NYC where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available en masse – often to tourists.
Recordings of the incident reveal several masked and armed personnel zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away onlookers. Crowds of locals trailed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
At a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He clarified the persons were released on the following day with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to prevent conflict that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the raid, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, instead of protection. It must stop," a political candidate stated.
The city's advocacy organizations spoke out also.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to citizen protection and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
ICE policy prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has said it refrains from take into custody citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that over 170 American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and nationwide this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies targeting ICE are widespread as are claims of force and abusive practices.
Most recently, a document filed by advocacy organizations claimed healthcare failures of pregnant women in government custody.
