Multiple Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes A Delta Airlines Aircraft Arriving in Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries when a Delta flight originating in LA to Sydney experienced significant turbulence this past Friday.

Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier stated. Four flight attendants were injured.

Emergency medical services stated they assessed a total of five people, and transported three to a medical facility with relatively minor issues that comprised back pain and headaches. The patients' ages were between their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by severe turbulence, with researchers indicating that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the aircraft, the representative added, clarifying that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at the airport at 06:48 local time on the day in question.

Paramedics said they got a call just a mere three minutes before the plane arrived, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.

In the previous year, 25 people were injured when another Delta jet, travelling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "severe" turbulence just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a harrowing five seconds period of extreme instability. A traveler passed away and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is not uncommon on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of strong or severe turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are statistically infrequent.

Research indicates that there are around five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance every year, out of a total of in excess of 35 million journeys that currently occur around the world.
