The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
