Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
People have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future governance of the region
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of the population desire the war to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

"As the night comes, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
