Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
