Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
