Folly and Regal Arrogance Ruined Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, possibly the most impactful ever captured of a royal family member.
Present was the Baron Killyleagh, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate smiled suggestively in the background.
Lacking that snapshot, shot at a gathering in 2001, few would have credited the assertions of a teenager who declared she was trafficked across the sea and forced to have cursory sexual encounters with a individual of the royal bloodline?
A curious, telling gesture by someone who had publicly asserted to have no been aware of her, said he could no have had intimate contact with her, and yet paid a substantial sum of his mother's resources to avert a drawn-out court action.
Years of Scandal
Considering this, talk of the monarchy acting swiftly to sever ties with Andrew are misguided. This controversy has continued for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and a further photo of Andrew strolling pleasantly with a convicted sex offender emerged.
- Self-importance: To what extent did his family members, maybe even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Questionable Associations: They must have known, if his aides and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he publicly welcomed them to palaces.
- Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his extravagance with state resources.
Travel were listed in public records: private aircraft travel from the royal residence to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of regular transport, all for the comfort of "the frequent flyer".
World of Deference
Additionally the entitlement which expected respect when he walked into a space or the supreme obsession about his honorifics used on his correspondence in messages to his personal acquaintances.
He managed to escape consequences while his mother, who inexplicably indulged him, was still surviving. The sovereign did at least strip him of public duties and military positions in the wake of his ill-fated and, as revealed, mendacious television interview six years ago.
Latest Events
It was only in the last fortnight that events progressed rapidly, following the issuance of biographical works giving more disturbing particulars of his behavior and that of his companions.
Additional revelations have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could get away with lying about his interaction with a disgraced individual.
People (and the media) were far more perceptive of the royal family. There was not a single person of any consequence to defend him, a consequence of all those years of presumption.
Monarchical Concerns
The wiser royals recognized that. The primary concern is to hand down the institution, if not as before at least complete and unblemished.
For generations the last 190 years trying to overcome the image of past sovereigns, showing they are valuable, responsible and attentive to their subjects.
His actions endangered all that in peril in an time when deference and discretion is no longer enough.
The Fallout
Finally, the famously uncertain sovereign was pushed further. There was little choice. The palace had relinquished authority of the account.
Now it is the loss of titles and the continued and life-long public humiliation that will afflict Andrew the most.
- Demotion: Demoted to just a commoner
- Prior Instance: The first member to forfeit his designations in modern times
- Armed Forces: Particularly painful given his service in the conflict
He is still a counsellor of state, theoretically able to act for the monarch, and he is still in the succession to the crown, but none of these will ever happen.
Future Prospects
Can persons he comes across still defer to him? Will they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Would they say Sir,
Certainly, he is not withdrawing to a common area, but to the monarchy's vast estate at Sandringham.
At that location, he will be provided by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some form of private allowance.
This differs from his prior accommodation, where he paid a minimal rent for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.
Pending Matters
The situation continues. There are still documents in the hands of US Congress to be disclosed.
- Political Pressure: Will lawmakers seek further action
- Monetary Probe: Or investigate the improper use of taxpayer funds
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his actions
Perhaps for the moment the institutional damage to the institution is contained. The statement from the institution was plainly that the stripping of designations was what the monarch, and especially other senior royals, desired.
A Shift in Position
The cessation of pretence that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the brief announcement showed clearly that the monarchy were supporting the victim's narrative of occurrences.
Additionally, for the premiere occasion they finally showed consideration for the victims: "The measures are considered essential, regardless of the fact that he maintains his innocence of the allegations against him."
In the end it is presumption, selfishness and indolence that will destroy the crown. In his foolishness, personal excess and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have grasped that reality.
