EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
