Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
